Touge is a Japanese word meaning "pass." The word is spelled tôge and refers to a mountain pass or a road with many turns. The term has been popularized outside of Japan due to the current "drifting" fad that has expanded to the United States, Europe, Australia, and other countries. Because of the term's rapid spread in use, it is often incorrectly applied to other forms of illegal street racing and even organized motorsports.
Many consider the "corners" of these public roads to be equal to or greater in difficulty to their track counterparts. However, due to the surface construction, grade of incline, and narrow width of the passes, they are considered infinitely more dangerous to compete on. When those factors are combined with the fact that these roads remain open to regular traffic, a potentially deadly combination is achieved.
