Sweet.....I had a '75 Firebird, but was not used for racing. I put some air shocks in the back and ran dual exhaust out the sides, removed the air filter and threw on some headlight covers, but that was the extent of my mods. Oh yeah, I put on louvers on the rear. Can you still buy louvers? Anyone remember them?

it depends, on a normal day it runs 11.70@114MPH. the best it ran was 11.65 with a 50 lb lighter driver and cool day. i varies on weather, humidity etc... anywhere from 11.70 to 11.85 on any given day unless its about 100 out.
60 ft times are consistant 1.64-1.65 with using a 4600 RPM launch chip on trans brake.

today was the northern nationals 1st day of eliminations. It was an eventful weekend. Let me start out.

Thursday- Tech ends at 9 PM
got car to track at 7:30 PM for tech inspection and pit area. waited in line for 2 hours 45 minutes. just to get to the gate to check in. then i waited 45 minutes in line to get my pit pass and finish sign up. keep in mind i had already pre registered and pre paid. so then i ask them where i can tech. they say there will be a group coming around in the morning when the gates open to tech the cars out in the field, where i was, due to the fact that IHRA had taken over our track and pit areas for there "bigshot" drivers. so i say ok, i then leave the truck and car there on the trailer over night.

Friday- Gates open at 7 AM and Qualifying start at 8 AM.
turns out the gates never closed because people were coming in all night long. I get there at 6:30 AM ready to go. 7 rolls around, no tech people coming through. also by this time i drove a half mile to the torco truck to get gas. nobody there. so i go back to the pits. wait longer then people are wondering what to do. i ask around and im told to go to the "Tech Trailer" which is filled with reject d***heads that dont know what is going on. but ill get to that later.

7:15 AM- so I go to the "tech trailer" wait in line there for an hour, and then the "friendly" Tech "Official" comes to my car. I hand him my tech card. He says "I need to see your IHRA license and Membership card".
I say "I dont have any of those" .
official says - go to the tech trailer and apply for a member ship.
then see me when you get done.

The first qualifier is run at 8 AM as planned without half the drivers.

so im thinking ok no problem. i wait in line at the trailer. 15 minutes pass. the b***h at the window writes my info down.
She gets done and says that will be 65 dollars. well i only have 30 dollars on me. so i tell her ill back in a while. well turns out the track officials from our track came around while i was wasting my time with the excellent service from the IHRA officials. I go see the Track manager, the main dude for our track. he says just give me your tech card ill take care of everything. so by this time its 9 AM.
I finally get a chance to go to the torco truck to get my damn gas.

I say i want 5 gallons of 112. he says ok. so after he pumps it he says that will be 35 dollars. i have 30 on me. so i go out to my pit car and get some more money. 7.00 a gallon for f'in gas?.
i pay him no problem. here is the problem:::
it is normally 4.50 a gallon and totals about 22.50 which is why i gave him 25 to start. turns out because it is such a large event torco has to have there say in this as well. so basically im in a "happy" mood by now. I get to my pits, get ready for the next qualifier, which is 2 total, i missed the first one thanks to stupid people. i go up to the line get my car ready, the official there says
"you need permanent numbers."
i say ok i got them at home.
I make my pass at 12 PM or so.
I then get down to the end of the track. make the turn to get my time slip. then there is a Official that is one of the track cleanup guys. he says, you gotta have permanent numbers. same old crap new wrapper. I say i know the other guy told me and yes i have them. so i get my time slip. i come back to the pits my dad says they need you up at the tech trailer. they announced it over the speakers for me to come to the trailer. then the track manager comes up to me and says dont worry about it its probably about permanent numbers. i say ok no problem. 1 PM rolls around. i go home for a break because im done for the day. i come back at 3:30 PM to see what they wanted earlier and to watch the "Pro Drivers" run. so i go to see what they wanted and im preparred with my 65 dollars for membership. this is where it gets crazy...

This b***h at the window again, same one. says you have to have a membership for IHRA events. I say nobody ever told me that when i came here. and then i say well martin- my local track, said i dont have to worry about membership and all that. she says i dont care what they told you this is an IHRA event and you need this and that. blah blah blah. so i tell her my story and they dont care. then this other dude comes up he says do you know you broke the rules by running down the track without IHRA approval. he says there is no insurance on you and blah blah blah. then he says were about to throw you out. so by this time ive paid my membership appologize for whatever, which is caused by no communication from about 30 different officials which all tell me something different.

so i get my membership paid off and what not then she says, you need to take this to jon deoushy. which is my track manager. it is a paper for IHRA certification. a license. i take it him he says what the hell are they doing. you running in ET class not the top fuel. its not like your going 300 MPH at 5 seconds. so we go back to the "tech Trailer" he explains to them all this stuff and he says its no where in the rule book where i have to be licensed to run my car unless i go like 9 seconds or lower. so they get into it with him. he gets all over them and they shut up. he hands me my license form and says take this thing and throw it in the trash. if they give you any more problems see me. I guarantee it will not happen again.
no problems after that.

i continued this post to take a piss and take a break.

Saturday- gates supposedly open at 8 and races start at 9 AM.

by this time im so pissed i cant even see straight.

so i get my car ready and all that go and run.

In my one qualifier from friday that i ran i had a 11.81.
i say ok well today its a nice day we'll go with a 11.73 for dial in time.
get up the line with my Permanent tech Numbers on my car run my race against a car with a 10.19 dial in. he redlights. and we both break out. i win instantly because he redlighted. the car goes 11.62 @114.8 MPH


the problem is its the fastest the car has ever run. so im lost with my dial in time and with a reason why it ran so good. the weather was good but it wasnt perfect. so im all happy about winning the first round. i wait until 1:45 expecting to run my car next at about 5PM or so, according to the schedule. they call No Box ET to the line. i say what the hell? so i get my car up the line and race with a 11.66 dial in time. it runs 11.74 . I lose. no problem, oh well thats racing.

so that ends my wonderful weekend of racing.

I spend 150 for entry fee.
65 for membership that i dint need
35 in gas
30 in food
plus the time i took off work to race
plus the frustrations

let me just say that in this weekend, i have never thought something this big could be that unorganized. IHRA officals couldnt organize a soft ball game. you talk to 30 different people and get 30 different answers.

basically i have a bag that holds 5 lbs of sh*t and they gave me 20 lbs.

yes i was rather happy. i will never run another sanctioned race again. too many a**h***s.
